Improving School Attendance
Helping your pupils get the best from education
Education Welfare Support that suits you
At Peninsula Education, we share your goals – to get children into school everyday so they can achieve their best.
So we’re proud to bring our team of highly-trained and experienced Education Welfare Officers to help you improve your whole school attendance rates, bring individual students with persistent absence problems back into school, and deal with children at risk of exclusion. Build a support package that works for you, and be sure of quick responses, clearly delivered expertise, and fair and flexible payment options every time.
Why invest in Attendance Support?
Poor attendance is known to significantly affect pupil attainment whilst also placing extra pressure on staff and governors by taking them away from other areas of work. It’s for this reason that Ofsted inspections focus heavily on proper attendance monitoring and require evidence of strategies in place to improve attendance where required.
However, schools don’t often have the extra staff, time, and resources required to increase attendance and can end up stuck in a cycle of low Ofsted grades, increased workload, and ever-decreasing attendance.
But by working with our experienced Education Welfare Officers, you can take advantage of our time, knowledge, and resources to increase your attendance and break the cycle. So your pupils can achieve more academically, and your staff can go back to focusing on providing the best level of teaching to your students.
Strategic Attendance Support
Improving your whole school attendance rate
Boosting overall attendance rates is known to improve attainment and wellbeing for all pupils, not just those who have been absent.
But improving attendance can be hard if you don’t know where the problem is or which changes to make. Key patterns and areas for improvement can be easy to miss, and even excellent attendance rates can fall unexpectedly if you don’t know the pitfalls to avoid.
That’s where we come in. We’ll work with you to fine-tune your attendance strategy, using our experience to increase your school’s overall attendance and keep it there. So all your children can get the best out of school and achieve their full potential.
Our Strategic Attendance Support includes:
- Attendance data reviews
- Audits of attendance systems and policies
- Holding attendance clinics
- Writing attendance reports
- Preparing for Ofsted inspections
- Providing telephone & email support
Direct Support with Persistent Absence
Getting individual pupils back into school
Missing even 15 days of school a year can significantly damage a student’s progress, with the effects compounding over time to cause a greater risk of exposure to crime and unemployment later in life.
But supporting these Children Missing from Education (CME) to return to school can present a difficult challenge, especially if you don’t have the staff, resources or tools to make home visits, chase evidence, and pursue legal action against parents.
Thankfully, our experienced team is here to help you bring your students back to school every day and keep them there. So they can enjoy a consistent routine and make progress towards their goals.
Our Direct Support with Persistent Absence includes:
- Identifying cases of concern
- Creating an action plan
- Making home visits
- Supervising casework
- Providing legal support
- Telephone & email support
Support with Children at Risk of Exclusion
Permanent exclusions are a sanction supported by the Government only when used as a last resort to protect the welfare of other members of the school and in the event of a serious breach of behaviour policy. Failing to follow exclusions procedures correctly could lead to unfair, unreasonable, and unlawful exclusions, or result in reasonable exclusions being overturned, endangering the welfare of other school members.
But with the timely support of one of our experienced Education Welfare Officers, you can prevent a serious behavioural situation from escalating and the child needing to be excluded unless absolutely necessary. And in unavoidable instances our team will guide both your staff and governors in following the correct process, to ensure the fairest and best possible outcome for all involved.
Exclusion Guidance For Headteachers
Deciding whether or not to permanently exclude a student can be extremely difficult. There are multiple factors to consider – their behaviour in line with previous offences and your school’s behaviour policy; the impact on that child’s education versus the impact their behaviour is having on the education of other students, and whether the exclusion would be discriminatory based on protected characteristics. It is important for the welfare of your students and staff, for future Ofsted inspections, and for legal reasons, that you make the correct decision.
To support you in this decision, our highly-trained Education Welfare Officers are on hand to provide remote support, talking you through each of these factors in turn, and bringing their wealth of experience to help you arrive at a decision that is best for everyone involved.
Add this option to your overall support package for when you need it, or get in touch for a one-off conversation, and go away knowing you’ve made the right decision.
Exclusion Guidance For Governors
Following any permanent exclusion, the Governers must review the decision and consider any representation made by the parents or guardians. To avoid unlawful, unfair, or unreasonable exclusions taking place, or running the risk of reasonable exclusions being overturned, this process must be done correctly and in line with the law.
To ensure this is the case for any exclusion you make, we provide comprehensive training for Governors and Senior Leadership Teams. So you can feel confident in your knowledge of the key legislation and guidance surrounding exclusions and know exactly what to do during the review process.
